Downing Street To Fly Welsh Flag

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Wales FlagThe Welsh flag will be flown in Downing Street as the Wales meet France in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup.

David Cameron said that due to the importance of the match, and the achievement of the Welsh team, the Union Flag will be replaced by the Welsh Dragon for the day.

“Wales are the last home nation competing in the Rugby World Cup and I wish them every success in the semi-final against France on Saturday.” Mr Cameron said.

“We would only usually fly a home nation flag for a final, but I know how important a competition this is and we all want to get behind Wales, so I’ve decided to break with tradition on this occasion and fly the flag for Wales in Downing Street on Saturday.”

Cardiff West MP, Kevin Brennan, had the idea to hoist the flag in Downing Street, and after lobbying the Prime Minister, Mr. Cameron agreed to the suggestion.

Freedom Of Gaddafi Stronghold Celebrated With Flag Raising

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Libyan FlagA number of building some of the last towns held by Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi are flying the Libyan flag.

The flag that can be seen flying from a number of buildings in the liberated town of Bani Walid, was previously the national flag during the Kingdom of Libya period between 1951 and 1969, and was made possible by the liberation of the town by the interim government’s forces.

Ahmed Bani, a spokesman for the new ruling body’s military forces, said “Ninety per cent of Bani Walid has been liberated.”

As a mark of festivity when the flags were raised, eye-witnesses reported guns being fired in the air and crowds in several buildings in the town’s square, cheering to welcome the liberation.

The largest tribe in Libya, the Warfalla tribe, acknowledge Bani Walid as their ancestral village. Many of the tribe, reportedly one in six people, are loyal to Gaddafi in this politically important and influential town.

The areas surrounding Bani Walid have harboured many hundreds of Gaddafi supporters, who, in an effort to halt the liberation of the town, ensured the town was under siege for several weeks.

Flying of Saudi Arabian Flag Causes Anger Against US School

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

United States National FlagOutrage has been caused by an innocent action on the part of Bauder Elementary School in Fort Collins, Colorado, after the flag of Saudi Arabia was hoisted to a higher position than the nearby Stars and Stripes.

The furore started after parents noticed the action and complained that the school was being insensitive given the upcoming September 11th anniversary, a commemoration of a tragic loss of life where 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals.

The school’s principal Brian Carpenter has said that the raising of the flag was not intended to cause offense, and was intended to represent the diverse backgrounds of the school’s students.

The procedures and rules for the US flag is set out in federal law, which states that no flag or pennant and fly higher – or at the same level to the right – of the US national flag.
